We guide you through the ups and downs of raising multilingual children

Our quiz revealed that you are a bilingual minority household

This group’s biggest concern is to create need.

How is this relevant?

You have more in common with people in the same household constellation than friends who speak the same language.

You need people who speak your language for playdates and social interactions. You need people who are in the same household constellation to ask for advice.

Focus on creating space for your languages

Your group is different from Trilingual and Bilingual Majority households because neither of the other needs to justify their language as much as you do. Your life is so clearly dominated by another language that you need to make sure your language gets protected.

On the surface, for your child there is no advantage in speaking your language other than pleasing you. Unfortunately that’s rarely enough to keep them going. This is why it’s paramount for you to create safe spaces for your languages quickly and beware of making exceptions! They will cut deep into your language space.

Visualise a meadow: Its fence is broken which requires a quick fix and heightened security measures.
